All About the New iPhone 12 Series

Fri, Oct 16, 20 . Kirt Carbon

The iPhone 12 launch has been hotly anticipated with a focus on new-age tech and Apple's foray into the world of 5G components.

Tim Cook and his team were able to put on quite the show and showcased four new models in the iPhone 12 lineup.

Let's dig deeper into what the new iPhones have to offer, how they compare to previous models, and what makes them special.

The new iPhones include:

  • iPhone 12 Mini (5.4")
  • iPhone 12 (6.1")
  • iPhone 12 Pro (6.1")
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max (6.7")

Design Updates

The aesthetics have changed with Apple's latest launch as the brand reverts to its classic "square-edged" design. This flatter, more traditional look is Apple's way of moving away from other brands and their curved-edge designs.

The development team has also equipped the new iPhones with a "Ceramic Shield", which is designed to protect the device from impact. This shield acts as an extra layer of defense when dropping a phone from your hand or out of your pocket. The glass itself is made of nano-ceramic crystals, which is where the name comes from.

Apple has also launched a unique set of colors to choose from.

  • iPhone 12 Mini - White, Blue, Black, Green, and Red
  • iPhone 12 - White, Blue, Black, Green, and Red
  • iPhone Pro - Gold, Blue, Silver, and Graphite
  • iPhone Pro Max - Gold, Blue, Silver, and Graphite

The Pacific Blue has caught the eye of industry experts as it's different from last year's blue. It's huskier and has more of a darker undertone to it which is a pleasant surprise.

Key Features

1) 5G Capability

This was the star of the show during Apple's launch and it's something that should push the telecommunications industry into a 5G-centric market.

All iPhone 12 devices can handle 5G signals and all relevant carriers are doing their bit to lay down the infrastructure for such a transition. To enunciate and highlight this point, Verizon specifically mentioned being happy to push the world towards a 5G-friendly setup whether it's in airports, stadiums, or on a random street in your city.

Why is the 5G feature beneficial?

It comes down to faster Internet speeds, easier access, and being able to get more out of your connection when away from home.

As of right now, the iPhone 12 is expected to handle all types of 5G bands and will also be equipped with what's termed as the Smart Data mode. In this mode, the device can switch between LTE and 5G support without missing a beat allowing users an opportunity to save on battery without a dip in performance.

2) MagSafe Charging

The charger is always a unique talking point with Apple devices and nothing is different from the iPhone 12. For this launch, Apple has brought forward an old name that it used to use for laptop chargers (MagSafe).

In this scenario, MagSafe refers to a set of magnets that are going to be built into the device and charger for immediate compatibility. This means as soon as the iPhone 12 is near the wireless charging pad, it will snap into place making sure it's always in the right spot for maximum charging output.

With this type of charging device, it will become easier to walk near the charger and quickly put the iPhone 12 on charge. With other wireless charging solutions, it becomes a hassle to figure out whether or not the phone is charging.

The MagSafe charging solution will save quite a bit of time for those wanting to put their iPhone 12 on charge quickly.

3) Cameras

With each passing year, the iPhone's camera has gotten stronger and stronger. This year is no different as Apple continues to push the industry to new heights.

Apple has included a new LiDAR scanner for improved photographic potential, enabled a quicker autofocus feature in low light, and introduced Night Mode.

The cameras are remarkably powerful with the fine-tuning they've done at Apple. In this case, the Night Mode is a fascinating addition to the iPhone 12's list of features as it allows for quality time-lapse photography in poor lighting. When combined with the built-in Smart HDR capability, this makes it easier than ever before to take out the iPhone and shoot videos in all types of lighting situations.

4) Screen

The screen is a major talking point with the iPhone 12 because they have looked to cater to everyone's needs. Whether it's the small-sized look of the iPhone 12 Mini or the jumbo-sized iPhone 12 Pro Max, both have gorgeous screens that have reduced bezels for maximum screen space.

The screen sizes were:

  • iPhone 11 - 6.1"
  • iPhone 11 Pro - 5.85"
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max - 6.5"

Now they are:

  • iPhone 12 Mini - 5.4"
  • iPhone 12 - 6.1"
  • iPhone 12 Pro - 6.1"
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max - 6.7"

This shows the company has looked to up the ante when it comes to the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max. Both screens have seen an increase in terms of size and the pixel density has also risen to 458 PPI with the Pros.

It's these subtle changes that have gone a long way in highlighting what the iPhone 12 is capable of. While the iPhone 11 was a well-designed launch last year, the iPhone 12 has kicked things up a few notches. Apple has taken the time to create a more powerful, gorgeous, sleeker iPhone lineup that is perfect for the world of 5G networks.

Due to these changes, the brand should see an influx of sales in the coming months.
